Fibrefusion
is an exhibiting group of textile artists who are tutored/mentored by Pauline
Verrinder. They meet for a fortnightly workshop at Cottenham Village College,
nr. Cambridge.
The aim of the workshop has always been to encourage each member to develop
and extend their existing skills and expertise, based on a strong design
foundation and motivation. The atmosphere is sharing, supportive and inspirational
with a strong bond having been forged between individual members.
The group exhibits on a regular basis, both locally, nationally and internationally.
They have exhibited for several years at the Knitting & Stitching Shows
at Alexandra Palace, Harrogate and the NEC. The group have also exhibited
at the Fashion, Embroidery & Stitch Show 2006 in Harrogate, being one of
the main exhibitors and will again be exhibiting at the show in 2009. A
busy and exciting year for Fibrefusion was 2004 when the group were invited
to exhibit in Jersey, Channel Isles at their Textile Showcase and again
at Quilt Et Textilkunst, Munich, in Germany in December. Each time we launch
a new book, we are grateful to Art Van Go who have invited us to launch
our books with an exhibition in their gallery. “Textiles in Focus” at Cottenham
nr. Cambridge is also another regular exhibiting venue. Forthcoming exhibitions
will be at the Knitting & Stitching Show, Harrogate, Nov. 07 and Textiles
in Focus, Feb. 08.
As a shared project in the Spring of 2002, Fibrefusion published their first
book ‘Beyond Boundaries’. The electric and inspirational spirit of the group,
invited the challenge of working on a book and it quickly became a hard
learning curve but with everyone gaining greatly from the experience. The
skills and contacts within the group were drawn upon and combined with individual
expertise, in pursuance of what was initially just a challenge to encourage
Fibrefusion to extend their horizons.
Interest and demand for the first book resulted in several re-prints and
due to its success we were encouraged to publish a second book ‘Encrustation’
in June 2003 which to our delight was met with similar acclaim.
In July 2005 we launched our third book ‘Evolutions, a stitcher’s evolutionary
workbook which offered an open invitation to all who worked with fabric
and thread to share with us the continual evolution of our skills and art.
Every time we work on a new book we endeavour to learn from previous mistakes,
but also strive to keep moving forward. Our latest venture in publishing
is our fourth book called ‘On Form’ - a stitchers’ workbook on sculptural
textiles. With the passion for our subject still as energetic as ever, we
felt that it was important to keep our work evolving, so we elected to change
the book’s format and style to inject a fresh approach to our work.
